TENNESSEE ANIMAL LAWS: The following laws apply to Companion Animals. Anyone with questions about these laws can contact the Sumner County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Division (615-452-2400).


T.C.A. 44-8-408 : LEASH LAW - It is unlawful for any person to allow a dog belonging to or under the control of such a person, or that may be habitually found on premises occupied by the person, or immediately under the control of such a person, to go upon the premises of another, or upon a highway or upon a public road or street (exceptions for a dog on the hunt, on the way to or from a hunt or chase, dogs driving or guarding livestock) (Class C Misdemeanor)

T.C.A. 44-8-410: BITCHES TO BE CONFINED WHILE PROUD (in heat) - Every owner of a bitch is required to confine the same for 24 days during the time the bitch is proud (in heat). (Class C Misdemeanor)

T.C.A. 44-8-411: NO LIABILITY FOR KILLING PROUD BITCH AT LARGE - Any person crippling, killing, or in any way destroying a proud (in heat) bitch that is running at large shall not be held liable for the damages due to such killing or destruction.

T.C.A. 68-8-103: HARBORING OR OWNING UNVACCINATED DOG OR CAT - It is a Class C Misdemeanor for any person to own or harbor any dog or cat which has not been vaccinated for Rabies.
